Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox was awarded a Five-Star rating by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, according to a May 13 announcement by medicare.gov/care-compare.

The Five-Star rating is the highest possible score given by the federal agency and places Silver Cross among the top 12 percent of all eligible hospitals in the United States. The national average is three out of five stars.

Silver Cross is reported to be the only hospital in Will and Grundy counties to receive this distinction. “At Silver Cross, our patients are at the center of everything we do,” said Michael Mutterer, Silver Cross Hospital President and Chief Executive Officer. “A CMS 5-Star rating affirms that we provide exceptional patient care and achieve superior outcomes. This recognition belongs to every one of our employees, Medical Staff members and volunteers who, TOGETHER, always put the care, safety and experience of our patients first.”

The ratings published by CMS are intended to help consumers compare hospitals nationwide based on safety, quality, and patient experiences at nearly 4,000 facilities. The system assigns one to five stars based on a cumulative score across categories such as mortality rates, safety of care, readmission rates, patient experience, and timely effective care.

According to Silver Cross Hospital’s announcement, it performed above the national average in each category measured by CMS—including safety of patient care, mortality rates and patient experience.

In addition to this recent honor from CMS in 2026, Silver Cross has received several other recognitions including straight A’s for Safety from Leapfrog Group over multiple years; a Leapfrog Top Hospital Award; repeated inclusion as a Newsweek World’s Best Hospital; being named among America’s Top Hospitals eleven times; ranking #1 in Surgical Care Excellence in Illinois two years running according to Healthgrades; and being recognized as a U.S. News & World Report Best Regional Hospital.
