Southern Illinois University announced on May 11 that its baseball team will host Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) for the final midweek matchup of the season at Itchy Jones Stadium.
The upcoming game marks an important contest as both teams look to solidify their positions before entering postseason play. Southern Illinois recently swept Belmont and secured a spot in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Salukis have been led by strong performances from players such as Kristian Sprawling, who is on a 14-game hitting streak, and Troy Shepard, who was named MVC Pitcher of the Week after throwing eight innings with seven strikeouts against Belmont.
Head coach Lance Rhodes is in his seventh season and has guided the Salukis to back-to-back 40-win seasons for the first time in program history. Rhodes reached his 200th win earlier this year and currently holds a record of 217-144 at SIU. The team’s roster features experienced upperclassmen along with several newcomers expected to contribute immediately.
The Salukis are coming off a historic offensive year, ranking among national leaders in runs scored, home runs, slugging percentage, doubles, triples, sacrifice flies, and stolen bases. Returning players like Michael Mylott and Gabe Petrucelli continue to provide power at the plate while pitchers Meade Johnson and Dylan Petrey anchor the staff. The pitching staff leads The Valley with a .251 opponent batting average and has collected ten saves this season.
Itchy Jones Stadium serves as home field for Southern Illinois baseball games. The stadium features artificial turf and a state-of-the-art video board according to the official website. Richard ‘Itchy’ Jones led the program through notable successes including multiple NCAA Tournament appearances; his uniform number has been retired by SIU according to the official website.
The broader significance of this matchup lies in both teams’ preparation for postseason tournaments while continuing traditions within NCAA Division I baseball competition according to the official website.
