The Southern Illinois University football team announced on Apr. 20 that it will play a Week 0 game at the University of West Florida to open its 2026 season.
The matchup is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. in Pensacola, Florida, and marks the first meeting between the two programs. The Salukis have not played in Florida since their visit to Florida Atlantic on Sept. 3, 2016.
Following the opener against West Florida, Southern Illinois will travel to Samford on Sept. 3 and then host Southeast Missouri State (SEMO) for Family Weekend on Sept. 12.
The Southern Illinois Salukis Men’s Football program competes at the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision level and claimed a national title in 1983 according to the official website. The team hosts its home games in Carbondale, Illinois as noted by the official website and is affiliated with Southern Illinois University per university sources.
The Saluki serves as both mascot and symbol for the athletics program; this ancient dog breed is recognized for its speed, grace, and endurance according to information from the official website.
