Southern Illinois women’s basketball head coach Kelly Bond-White announced on May 21 the signing of Yaiza Paredes Diaz, a junior transfer from Eastern Wyoming College.
The addition of Paredes Diaz is seen as significant for the Salukis, who compete at the NCAA Division I level and are members of the Missouri Valley Conference, according to the official website.
“She brings a toughness and competitiveness that fits exactly what we want our program to be,” said Bond-White. “Yaiza can impact the game in so many ways, whether that’s rebounding, stretching the floor, or creating mismatches. Defensively, her IQ, communication, and ability to adjust really stood out on film. She understands passing lanes, plays with active hands, and impacts winning on both ends of the floor. We’re excited about the experience and versatility she will bring to our team and look forward to seeing her continue to grow at SIU.”
Paredes Diaz averaged 12.3 points per game, 6.3 rebounds per game, and 2.2 steals per game last season while leading Eastern Wyoming College in steals. She posted a season-high 22 points against Northwest College and collected 13 rebounds against Central Wyoming College.
Her skills as a versatile forward include shooting from three-point range, defending multiple positions, rebounding effectively, and creating offensive mismatches for opponents—a combination expected to strengthen Southern Illinois’ frontcourt.
Paredes Diaz also enters Southern Illinois University as an academic high achiever with plans to major in Civil Engineering.
The Salukis host their home games at Banterra Center in Carbondale, Illinois according to the official website. The program operates from Carbondale as part of its participation in NCAA Division I competitions.
