The Southern Illinois University Salukis women’s softball team earned its 30th win of the season with a 10-1 run-rule victory over SIUE in five innings on Wednesday, Apr. 29. The game was played at Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois.
This win marks the fourth consecutive season that the Salukis have reached at least 30 victories, underscoring their consistency in NCAA Division I competition according to the official website. The team is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference and regularly competes against other collegiate programs at this level.
The Salukis were led offensively by Emily Williams, who hit a three-run home run in the third inning, and Mikaela Coburn, who delivered her first career grand slam during a six-run fourth inning. Freshman Hailey Lucas picked up her ninth win of the year after pitching two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Emma Gipson started for Southern Illinois and Brooklynn Danielson closed out the game with two strikeouts in a scoreless fifth inning.
SIUE took an early lead after an unearned run scored due to an error in the second inning. However, Southern Illinois responded strongly as Amanda Knutson tied it up with an RBI single before Williams’ home run gave them a lead they would not relinquish. Hayden Kurtz and Sydney Potter added RBIs before Coburn’s grand slam extended the advantage to nine runs.
