The Southern Illinois University Salukis Women’s Softball team split a doubleheader against Murray State on April 21, winning the first game 4-3 and losing the second 3-0.
This result affects the team’s standing as it continues its season in NCAA Division I competition, where every game contributes to their record and postseason prospects. The Salukis are members of the Missouri Valley Conference, according to the official website.
In game one, junior Amanda Knutson led Southern Illinois on offense by going 4-for-6 with two doubles and a run scored across both games. Juniors Mikaela Coburn and Emily Williams each had two hits, while sophomore Hayden Kurtz hit her sixth home run of the year. Junior pitcher Emily Delgado appeared in both games and secured the win in relief during game one by pitching 2.2 scoreless innings without allowing a hit or run.
The first matchup saw both teams record seven hits each. Williams drove in Sage Grann with an RBI double for SIU’s initial lead before Murray State tied it up. After trading runs through five innings—including a two-run home run from Kurtz that put SIU ahead—Delgado closed out the win by retiring all three batters she faced in the seventh inning.
Game two was less successful for Southern Illinois, as they were limited to five hits and could not score any runs. Freshman pitcher Hailey Lucas started strong but gave up three runs over five innings as Murray State capitalized on extra-base hits to secure victory.
The Salukis play their home games at Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois, according to the official website. Their next contest is scheduled for April 28 at home against SIUE—their final regular season game at Charlotte West Stadium this year.
