The Southern Illinois University Salukis Women’s Softball team secured a 5-3 victory over Northern Iowa on April 18, completing a three-game sweep and celebrating Senior Day in Carbondale.
The sweep marks an important milestone for the Salukis as they continue their strong season in the Missouri Valley Conference. The team participates in NCAA Division I competitions and is based in Carbondale, Illinois, according to the official website.
Seniors Erin Lee, Haley Wilkerson, and Brooklyn Pritchett were honored after the game for their contributions. All three played key roles during the match: Lee drew a walk, Pritchett scored a run, and Wilkerson earned an RBI with a bases-loaded walk. Head coach Jen Sewell said, “Just so proud of our seniors today and our team playing some of their best softball. Haley Wilkerson is on fire coming off the bench for pinch-hit at bats. She is seeing the ball so well right now.” Sewell also said, “Erin Lee is just a staple for us. We go as Erin goes. Another four-year senior who just gives us so much confidence. Those two (Lee and Wilkerson) as captains have pushed this team to new levels.” On Pritchett’s impact, Sewell said, “Pritchett has been such an amazing addition to our lineup. She scores nearly every time she enters the lineup.”
Junior pitcher Emily Delgado continued her strong performance by earning her second win of the weekend with 2.2 innings pitched without allowing any runs or walks and striking out three batters. Amanda Knutson hit a crucial three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning that gave Southern Illinois its final lead.
According to the official website, Southern Illinois hosts games at Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale and maintains membership in both NCAA Division I athletics and the Missouri Valley Conference.
Reflecting on her team’s achievement after sweeping Northern Iowa for the first time since 2019—and at home since 2010—Sewell said, “This team has worked so hard for this series and we loved seeing the team pick up big wins on a very emotional day… It’s a huge sweep.” The Salukis will next travel to Murray State for a doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday.
