State Representative Ryan Spain advanced Senate Bill 1573 to the Governor on May 21, aiming to reduce Illinois’ fee for certification as an electronic notary public.
Spain said, “Business leaders who rely on notaries public will be able to hire more Illinois notaries under this legislation and will reduce barriers to entry for new electronic notaries.”
Currently, individuals must pay an additional $25 fee to become an electronic notary in Illinois. The proposed legislation would waive that fee for two years. This change is intended to lower upfront costs and make it easier for more residents of Illinois to become certified as electronic notaries while the Secretary of State’s office considers a permanent solution.
Notaries play a key role in verifying signatures on legal documents and maintaining the integrity of transactions. The measure is expected to help industries such as real estate, legal services, and small businesses involved in interstate commerce by increasing access to notary services across the state.
Senate Bill 1573 was previously passed by the Senate under Senator Li Arellano’s sponsorship before being sent to the Governor. Spain, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2017 representing the state’s 73rd House District after replacing David R. Leitch, according to Ballotpedia.
