State Representative Charlie Meier honored the Breese Central High School women’s basketball and cheerleading teams at the Capitol on April 17, recognizing both as state champions.
The recognition highlights the achievements of local student athletes who brought home titles in their respective sports, drawing attention to their dedication and success.
Meier said, “I am honored to have Breese Central Cougar Women Basketball Team and Cheerleading Team to the Capitol today. Both of these teams are State Champions and I honored them with House Resolutions to honor their achievements. Congratulations to the Cougars and thank you for making our community proud!”
The Breese Central High School Cougars secured the 2026 Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Class 2A Girls Basketball State Championship by defeating Byron 44-28 on March 7, marking their second state title in program history. The school’s cheerleading team also won the 2026 IHSA Competitive Cheerleading State Championship in Class 1A. To commemorate these accomplishments, Meier filed House Resolutions 737 and 750.
Meier, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state’s 109th House District, replacing previous state representative David Reis according to Ballotpedia.
The celebration at the Capitol underscores community pride in local schools’ athletic programs and provides formal recognition from state government for student achievement.
