Illinois State Representative Dave Severin criticized the passage of a nearly $56 billion state budget by Illinois Democrats on June 1, saying it would result in higher taxes and increased spending. Severin, who voted against the measure, said in a statement that the budget was passed “in the dead of night on the final day of session,” and accused lawmakers of “doubling down on higher taxes, reckless spending, and policies that continue to hurt working families across Southern Illinois.”
“Once again, Illinois Democrats passed a bloated, nearly $56 billion budget in the dead of night that raises costs and doubles down on out-of-control spending. Families in Southern Illinois are already struggling, but instead of providing relief, Springfield politicians are piling on new taxes and higher fees,” Severin said.
Severin also said that under Governor J.B. Pritzker’s administration “spending has skyrocketed by 40%, yet Democrats continue to prioritize hundreds of millions of dollars for those here illegally while our most vulnerable citizens are left behind.” He further stated: “To make matters worse, this budget is packed with pork projects and insider spending, while hardworking taxpayers are forced to pay more of their hard-earned money for our failed energy policies and out-of-control spending.”
He concluded his remarks by saying: “Illinois families deserved real relief. Instead, they got more of the same.”
Severin is a Republican who was elected to represent Illinois’ 116th House District in 2023 after replacing previous state representative David Friess, according to official sources.
