State Representative Mike Coffey discussed on April 24 his support for a new economic development bill that could bring major changes to downtown Springfield, including the expansion of the BOS Convention Center and the creation of a new hotel.

The proposed legislation, often referred to as the “Bears bill,” is described by Coffey as a “Mega Project” bill with significant benefits for Springfield. The initiative is intended to help revitalize downtown and support local growth.

Coffey said, “It’s called a ‘Mega Project’ bill, but what it is going to do is help expand the BOS Convention Center and create a new flagship hotel right across from the existing Convention Center, so it’s a big win for the City of Springfield. That’s why I voted for it. So when people are talking about the Bears bill, I’m talking about the Springfield bill.”

He also addressed changes planned for the medical district in Springfield: “There’s a middle Illinois Medical District, and now apparently the boundaries are going to be different, and the bill would repeal the district, but then create a new yet similar District, so it’s basically expanding the district. You got to remember the two major employers in this town are the hospitals, and so we want that Medical District to grow.”

When asked why state law was needed for these projects in Springfield, Coffey said: “Well, because it gives you the tools you need for buying capability and government to get these things financed and across the finish line… I’m very thankful that governor’s office… cares enough about Springfield and to make this happen for us.” He added that cooperation among elected officials in Springfield has helped move these plans forward: “Springfield’s one of few towns that their elected officials work together despite party lines… I think it’s something to be very proud of.”

Coffey was elected as a Republican representative in 2023 after replacing Tim Butler according to public records.
