Nine public schools in Illinois raised tuition faster than inflation over a three-year period, according to a Higher Education Tribune analysis of in-state tuition for 2013-14 and 2016-17 at 115 public colleges and universities in 10 Midwest states.
Tuition rose by 19.83 percent at Northeastern Illinois University, 13.88 percent at Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville and 13.51 percent at Chicago State University. Governor's State University (12.04 percent), Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, (11.48 percent), Northern Illinois University (9.46 percent), Illinois State University (8.08 percent), Western Illinois University (7.55 percent) and Eastern Illinois University (3.91 percent) also increased tuition more than 3.11 percent.
The consumer price index rose by 3.11 percent from fall 2013 to fall 2016, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Three schools in Illinois increased tuition at a rate slower than inflation: The University of Illinois-Springfield (2.52 percent), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2.09 percent) and University of Illinois-Chicago (1.9 percent).
In-state tuition stayed flat at four schools in Ohio, Wisconsin and Missouri and was reduced at schools in Wisconsin and Missouri.

Tuition increases faster than inflation
Between the fall of 2013 and the fall of 2016, the consumer price index rose 3.11 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
