Adult use cannabis sales figures for Illinois from June to October 2025 have been released, showing consistent monthly transactions and ongoing improvements in sales tracking technology. According to the data, the number of items sold each month remained steady, with totals reaching over 42 million items for the year.
In July 2025, Illinois implemented a new seed-to-sale tracking system called Metrc across its cannabis industry. This rollout aimed to enhance accuracy and reliability in reporting actual sales by accounting for all discounts and promotions at checkout. A review of past data revealed that earlier months may have included pre-discount prices, but with the adoption of Metrc, retailers now report more accurate post-discount figures. "The sales tracking features in Metrc help retailers more accurately and reliably report actual sales, including all discounts and promotions at checkout. A thorough review of past data indicates prior months collected some pre-discount prices. The number of items sold remained consistent across months, resulting in the improved data showing cannabis consumers have been paying less at checkout and with pre-tax prices similar to prices in other states that have legalized adult use cannabis," according to officials.
Sales receipts submitted directly by retailers to the Illinois Department of Revenue were not affected by discrepancies from the previous tracking system. The introduction of Metrc is also set to improve categorization of sales between in-state and out-of-state consumers.
From January through October 2025, total adult use cannabis sales exceeded $1.27 billion. Monthly breakdowns show that both in-state and out-of-state resident purchases contributed significantly to these figures.
The state's move towards more transparent pricing aligns it with other regions where adult use cannabis is legal. The updated tracking approach is intended to give both consumers and regulators clearer insight into pricing trends and consumer spending patterns.
