Three individuals have been arrested following a burglary investigation at a vacant building formerly used as a medical facility in Edwardsville. On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, just after 3 p.m., the Edwardsville Police Department responded to a report of an active burglary at 1261 University Drive. Upon arrival, officers saw a male subject fleeing and took him into custody. Officers also noticed a female subject retreating into the building and set up a perimeter. After an extensive search, two female subjects were found hiding in the building’s ductwork and were taken into custody.
On Friday, January 9, the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office filed formal charges against three St. Louis residents: Jorge Alexander Miralda Castro (28), Britney Sawyer (31), and Raven Hill (37).
Castro faces five counts: burglary (Class 2 felony), criminal damage to property (Class 2 felony), unlawful possession of methamphetamine (Class 3 felony), possession of burglary tools (Class 4 felony), and illegal possession of ammunition without a FOID card (Class A misdemeanor). As of Friday, January 9, Castro was held at the Madison County Jail.
Sawyer and Hill are charged with burglary (Class 2 felony), criminal damage to property (Class 2 felony), and possession of burglary tools (Class 4 felony). Sawyer remained in custody at the Madison County Jail as of Friday, while Hill was not in custody.
The Edwardsville Police Department acknowledged support from several agencies during the investigation. “The Edwardsville Police Department would like to thank the Illinois State Police, the Highland Police Department, the Troy Police Department, and the SIUE Police Department for their assistance in this investigation.”
Officials emphasized that all charges are based on probable cause. “These charges, as well as the statements made herein, are based upon probable cause. The defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.”
