Mayor Brandon Johnson introduced a $1.6 million Tax Increment Financing (TIF) grant to the City Council on May 20 for the installation of an artificial turf field at Madigan Park in West Lawn.
The project, located at 4701 W. Marquette Road next to Mariano Azuela Elementary School, would replace a grass and gravel area with new artificial turf. The funding is expected to come from the 67th/Cicero TIF district, contributing to a total project cost of $2.8 million.
The city’s TIF program uses new property tax growth within designated districts to support public and private investments within their boundaries. The initiative aims to improve recreational facilities and community spaces in Chicago neighborhoods.
The Chicago Department of Planning and Development promoted efforts to enhance walkable neighborhoods and accessible waterfronts, contributing to community improvements, according to the official website. The department has more than 150 staff members dedicated to Chicago’s built and natural environment, advances comprehensive growth, sustainability, and zoning policies for the city, centers its operations on Chicago itself, and offers services including business development support, historic preservation efforts, and community enhancements—all according to the official website.
Ciere Boatright currently leads the department as commissioner according to the official website.
