Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie called on constituents on May 19 to voice their opposition to House Bill 4471, a measure that would ban Glock pistols in the state. The bill is scheduled for consideration by the House Gun Violence Prevention Committee.
McCombie said it is important for residents to participate in the legislative process and make their views known. She encouraged people to file witness slips, which allow individuals and organizations to officially record their support or opposition before committee hearings. According to McCombie, more than 3,000 witness slips have already been filed opposing the measure.
“Witness slips are a vital piece of the legislative process. Before a bill is heard in committee, the chairperson will read who has submitted witness slips and whether they support or oppose the bill. This helps inform legislators as to where Illinoisans and organizations stand, allowing members of the committee to make informed decisions when voting,” McCombie said.
McCombie was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 89th House District in 2023, succeeding Andrew Chesney, according to Ballotpedia.
The outcome of this committee hearing could impact gun policy discussions across Illinois. The high number of witness slips indicates significant public interest and involvement.
