Freddie Turnell earned his first victory as a member of the Fighting Illini and helped lead No. 13-ranked Illinois to a runner-up finish at the Hoosier Collegiate on April 19 at The Pfau Course in Bloomington, Indiana.
The event marked the end of the regular season for Illinois men’s golf, highlighting both individual and team performances ahead of postseason play. Turnell, competing as an individual, finished with rounds of 72, 70, and 70 to post a total score of 212 (-1), making him the only player under par for the weekend.
Illinois finished with a three-round team total of 875 (+23), just three shots behind Kansas (+20) in the race for first place. The Illini held off Purdue by five strokes and recorded head-to-head victories over all nine other Big Ten teams present in the field. Three members of Illinois’ lineup secured top-10 finishes: Dane Huddleston placed fifth at +3, while Jake Birdwell and Ryan Voois tied for sixth at +4 each. Max Herendeen and Trey Marrion tied for thirty-seventh at +14, while Ethan Wilson—also competing individually—tied for seventeenth with an eight-over-par performance.
University of Illinois Fighting Illini Men’s Golf engages in fall and spring tournaments that include conference and national events to foster competitive experience, according to the official website.
