Two new gyms are set to open in Bucktown this summer, aiming to provide both fitness training and a space for neighbors of all ages to connect. Trainer Ashley Stephen and business partner Erik Nelson are transforming the former Armitage Auto Repair at 2036 W. Armitage Ave. into Bucktown Assembly, while trainer Malik Scott is rebranding Pardner Sports Performance at 1852 N. Milwaukee Ave. as More Than Fit.
The arrival of these gyms adds more options for fitness enthusiasts in an area already known for workout classes and training facilities. Both projects aim not only to offer exercise opportunities but also foster a sense of community among local residents.
Nelson and Stephen are overseeing a three-month renovation for Bucktown Assembly, which will feature refurbished brick walls, foundation work, a locker room area, squat racks, cardio machines, and space for group classes. The gym’s programming will focus on strength-based training, conditioning, group workouts, mobility sessions, memberships, class packs, open gym access and personal training options.
Stephen said he hopes the gym becomes “a space for people to meet” that combines “science-backed training” with social connection: “So I think the junction of those two things is a space for people to meet and connect, and then also to train together and improve.” Nelson added that they want it to be “a gym where you go and you chat with your friends and hang out,” emphasizing its role as a gathering place.
Bucktown Assembly plans include a lounge area as well as opening garage doors on warm days so neighbors can gather inside or outside the facility. The owners expect the gym will open in July.
Meanwhile at More Than Fit on Milwaukee Avenue—set for a grand opening June 12—Scott continues his decade-long work coaching private clients across Chicago including youth athletes through partnerships with organizations like Chicago City Soccer Club and Pulaski International School. Scott described his approach as holistic: “We’re talking about goal setting, habit setting, behavioral change, confidence… And then that just carries over to the more like mind, body soul—the more spiritual side of that too.” He said once those elements connect “the umbrella opens up,” allowing deeper self-discovery through fitness.
More Than Fit will offer private sessions and small group classes led by Scott along with other trainers including support from a physical therapist; services also include pre- and postnatal training for women. Scott hopes it becomes “a training hub” welcoming “adults… parents… former athletes,” anyone seeking purposeful workouts or performance-focused coaching.
