Waukegan Board of Education schedules special meeting for April 21 to discuss sales tax proposal

The Board of Education for Waukegan Public Schools announced on April 19 that it will hold a Special Meeting on Tuesday, April 21, at 6:00 pm at the Educational Service Center located at 214 Washington Street. The meeting will start in open session with a presentation about a proposed sales tax increase before moving into closed session to discuss personnel matters. No official action by the Board is planned during this meeting.

The agenda for the meeting is available online for public review. The special presentation on the proposed sales tax increase is expected to be a key topic of discussion among board members and attendees.

Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 serves Lake County and includes schools such as Andrew Cooke Magnet Elementary School, Carman-Buckner Elementary School, Clearview Elementary School, Daniel Webster Middle School, Early Learning Center, Glen Flora Elementary School, Glenwood Elementary School, Greenwood Elementary School, H.R. McCall Elementary School, Hyde Park Elementary School, Jack Benny Middle School, John S. Clark Elementary School, Little Fort Elementary School, Lyon Magnet Elementary School, Miguel Juarez Middle School, North Elementary School, Oakdale Elementary School, Robert E. Abbott Middle School, Thomas Jefferson Middle School, Washington Elementary School, Waukegan High School and Whittier Elementary school according to the Illinois Report Card.

Demographically,the district reports its student body as being approximately 3.2 percent White, 13.2 percent Black or African American, 79.5 percent Hispanic or Latino and 1.3 percent Asian.

The district employed a total of 1,014 teachers earning an average salary of $63,524 before pension contributions during the most recent reporting period; women make up about 71 percent of teaching staff while men comprise nearly 29 percent.No teachers had more than ten absences in one school year.

Financially,the district spent $23,429 per student in the year 2020, amounting to total expenditures of $359 million dollars.

Chronic truancy remains an issue within Waukegan Community Unit District: there were over three thousand chronically truant students enrolled in the last reported school year—representing about twenty-one percent of all students—compared with a statewide average rate under ten percent as reported by ISBE. The Illinois State Board of Education defines chronic truancy as missing five percent or more of mandated school days without valid excuse.

Serving pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade,the district enrolled over fifteen thousand students during the most recent full academic year.
