Western Illinois University Leathernecks Women’s Softball lost to Tennessee State, 20-9, in the final game of their series in Nashville, according to an April 20 announcement.

The result marks a setback for the Leathernecks as they continue their season in NCAA Division I competition. The team competes as part of Western Illinois University’s intercollegiate athletics program and is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, according to the official website.

The Leathernecks started strong with an RBI bunt single from Payton Brown and tied the game at 4-4 in the second inning with additional contributions from Brown and Addie McLaughlin. However, Tennessee State responded with a decisive 14-run second inning that determined the outcome. Brown led Western Illinois offensively with five RBIs. McLaughlin reached base four times and scored three runs, while Ruby Tarr added two hits.

Western Illinois University Leathernecks Women’s Softball operates out of Macomb, Illinois and continues its schedule against other NCAA Division I teams within its conference structure, according to the official website. The team includes notable players such as Payton Brown who has been recognized for her offensive efforts this season.

Looking ahead, Western Illinois will return home to face Bradley University with hopes of improving their record after this loss.
