The Village of Western Springs announced on June 2 that residents can bring their worn American flags to Village True Value Hardware for proper retirement through the American Legion. The event will take place Thursday, June 11, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Pippin, the Western Springs Police Department’s Comfort K9, will be present at the event. Attendees can enter a drawing for a chance to win Pippin-themed merchandise and a new American flag. Flag Day is observed nationally on June 14.

Western Springs operates under a council-manager form of government and engages resident volunteers on boards and commissions to address community issues and provide recommendations, according to the official website. The village manager supervises personnel and executes policies set by the village president and board of trustees, who serve as elected volunteers. Village offices are located at 740 Hillgrove Avenue.

The upcoming flag retirement event aims to ensure that well-served flags are disposed of respectfully in accordance with established traditions.
