The United States Postal Service is preparing to open a new post office location on Damen Avenue near the center of Wicker Park, according to information available June 2. This development comes nearly a year and a half after the neighborhood’s only post office closed.

A sign for the U.S. Postal Service has been installed above a storefront at 1500-1520 N. Damen Ave., adjacent to a Lou Malnati’s restaurant. A real estate brochure from last year listed the post office as an upcoming tenant in this shopping center, and a facilities spreadsheet for Illinois leased by the Postal Service describes the site as “Wicker Park Retail Unit” with 1,524 square feet.

Despite visible signs of progress, additional details about the new location have not been provided by postal officials. Tim Norman, spokesperson for the United States Postal Service, said Monday he had no information to share “at this time.” The agency’s website also does not yet list this Wicker Park address among its locations.

The previous Wicker Park post office at 1240 N. Ashland Ave., which offered retail services and P.O. boxes, closed in early 2023 due to an expired lease. The former site has since become home to a Chick-fil-A restaurant that opened in March within the Wicker Park Commons development on Ashland Avenue.

At the time of closure, postal officials said they were searching for another location within ZIP code 60622 in order to maintain service levels for area residents. “The relocation project will consist of procuring a suitable substitute location, as close as reasonably possible to the existing location,” read their notice.
