Will Johannes was recognized as Scholar Athlete of the Week for May 4-10, according to a May 14 announcement from the University of Illinois. The senior catcher played a key role in the Fighting Illini’s 4-3 win over Northwestern on Senior Day, hitting a walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The recognition highlights both athletic and academic achievement. Johannes, who is from Mukwonago, Wisconsin, is majoring in Agricultural & Consumer Economics with a concentration in Agribusiness Markets and Management.
During Illinois’ five-game win streak that began on May 3, Johannes contributed significantly by batting .417 (5-for-12) with one home run, two doubles, three runs batted in and three runs scored. In addition to his offensive contributions during Senior Day on May 9, he also threw out a Northwestern runner attempting to steal second base earlier in the ninth inning.
The University of Illinois Fighting Illini baseball program participates in conference and non-conference games to build competitive experience as part of its athletics program under NCAA Division I and Big Ten Conference rules.
