Will Johannes was recognized as Scholar Athlete of the Week for May 4-10, according to a May 14 announcement from the University of Illinois. The senior catcher played a key role in the Fighting Illini’s 4-3 win over Northwestern on Senior Day, hitting a walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The recognition highlights both athletic and academic achievement. Johannes, who is from Mukwonago, Wisconsin, is majoring in Agricultural & Consumer Economics with a concentration in Agribusiness Markets and Management.

During Illinois’ five-game win streak that began on May 3, Johannes contributed significantly by batting .417 (5-for-12) with one home run, two doubles, three runs batted in and three runs scored. In addition to his offensive contributions during Senior Day on May 9, he also threw out a Northwestern runner attempting to steal second base earlier in the ninth inning.

The University of Illinois Fighting Illini baseball program participates in conference and non-conference games to build competitive experience as part of its athletics program under NCAA Division I and Big Ten Conference rules. The team offers student-athletes opportunities for competition, development and academic achievement while competing in intercollegiate athletics at the University of Illinois, according to the official website.

Johannes’ recognition as Scholar Athlete of the Week underscores his impact both on the field and academically.
