The Illinois Republican Party has released several new digital ads for Facebook targeting House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) for pushing a school funding formula that the GOP says favors Chicago Public Schools (CPS), according to a recent release from the party.
The ads feature a black-and-white image of Madigan with red copy reading, “Stop Madigan from holding schools hostage” and “Under Speaker Madigan, IL has the most unfair school funding system in the country.” Captions on the images accuse Madigan of bailing out CPS pensions at the expense of other school children.
“Madigan is willing to put politics ahead of the interests of Illinois children,” GOP spokesperson Steven Yaffe said in a press release. “He’s willing to take money from children across the state to bailout his friends in Chicago with no promise of reform. It’s just plain wrong.”

The state's school funding bill, SB1, has been vetoed by Gov. Bruce Rauner, who stripped the provisions regarding CPS pensions. Lawmakers now must decide whether to accept the changes or attempt an override.
