The Republican Governors Association (RGA) recently hailed Gov. Bruce Rauner for successfully negotiating conservative education reforms with Illinois’ Democratically controlled General Assembly.
The RGA said it was particularly impressed that Rauner achieved a tax credit program for private school scholarships.
“Rauner’s reforms show that conservative change is possible even in the most liberal of states,” the RGA wrote in its report. "As part of a landmark school funding deal negotiated with the Democrat-controlled General Assembly, Illinois will now become the largest blue leaning state to approve a tax credit program to provide students in need with scholarships to attend private schools."

The RGA cited the Chicago Tribune, which commended the advent of school choice in Illinois, expressing hope that the five-year program will becomes a permanent feature in Illinois’ school system.
Individual and business donors will receive a tax credit worth 75 percent of their donation to scholarship funds, and some low- and moderate-income students will receive funding to attend private schools.
