A Tollway Oversight Committee hearing for House Bill 5856 is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Room 122B of the Capitol Building.
Known as the Public Transit Poll Exemption, the bill would amend the Toll Highway Act to allow vehicles owned or operated by a mass transit district created under a provision of the Local Mass Transit District Act to use any toll highway without paying a toll if they care transporting passengers.
The bill is sponsored by Rep. Nicholas K. Smith (D-Chicago), who represents the 34th district, which includes the Chatham and Roseland neighborhoods in Chicago along with the all or parts of Brunham, Calumet City, Lansing, Ford Heights, Lynwood, Sauk Village, Willowbrook, Beecher, Manteno and Grant Park.
Co-sponsors include Rep. Robert Rita (D-Blue Island), Rep. Marcus C. Evans Jr. (D-Chicago), Rep. Carol Ammons (D-Urbana), Rep. Sonya M. Harper (D-Chicago) and Rep. Jonathan Carroll (D-Northbrook).
