The Kane County cities of Campton Hills and Gilberts were ranked the two safest cities in Illinois, a new study by the SafeWise website that examined violent crimes and property offenses concluded. 

Rounding out the list of the 10 safest cities in the state were Manhattan, Justice, Sandwich, Huntley, Hinsdale, La Grange Park, Bartlett and Pingree Grove. The 2020 State of Safety study by SafeWise.com found that the share of Illinois residents highly concerned about security was 47 percent, a decline of six percentage points compared to 2019 statistics.

Both Campton Hills and Gilberts have median household incomes of more than $105,000, the analysis found. Violent crime per 1,000 people amounted to 0.1 in Campton Hills and 0.4 in Gilberts. In terms of property crimes per 1,000 people, Campton Hills came in at 1.5 incidents, while Gilberts recorded 2.4 incidents, according to numbers based on FBI crime statistics.

Statewide, Illinois has a violent crime rate that exceeds the national average and stands at 4 incidents per 1,000 people, compared to 3.7 in the entire nation.

Property crimes in Illinois, however, fall below the U.S. average, according to the analysis.The odds of being a victim of a property crime in the state are 19.3 out of 1,000, while nationwide the odds are 22 out of 1,000, SafeWise.com reports.
