Gov. J.B. Pritzker confirmed in a press conference Monday that he will not be attending the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) meeting scheduled for this Thursday to discuss winter sports, basketball and other sport activities.
In response to a question from the media about whether he planned to attend the meeting, Pritzker said his position on the matter is “clear.”
“I think that there’s been a lot of interaction between IHSA and our staff, as well as IDPH,” Pritzker said during the press conference. “So we’ll certainly make available our staff for consultation and so on, but I think we’ve all been pretty clear about where we are with regard to winter sports.”
Pritzker has been a battle with the IHSA for the better part of a month since the organization decided to disobey his orders regarding Covid.
Sports Writer Pat Disabato expressed disappointment in Pritzker's decision.
“It’s really unfortunate that Gov. Pritzker will not attend Thursday’s IHSA meeting nor is there any evidence someone from his office or the IDPH will be there,” Disabato wrote on Twitter. “I never expected Pritzker to reverse course on the hoops season but how about listening to the IHSA’s perspective.”
The IHSA announced that its board of directors had extended an invitation to Pritzker’s office and the Illinois Department of Public Health to attend its upcoming board meeting.
