With his previous moratorium set to expire, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker plans to extend the ban on evictions for another 30 days.
In detailing his proposals, the governor said he plans to adjust the moratorium based on much federal aid the state receives from COVID-19 relief legislation just passed by the U.S. Senate.
Pritzker’s executive action on evictions was enacted on March 20, and since then, he has issued a series of 30-day extensions as the coronavirus crisis has lingered.
In November, the governor also tweaked the moratorium to provide new protections for landlords, who have complained that some tenants in a position to pay their rent have taken full advantage of the suspension.
According to CBS News, as many as 10 million renters across the country are now behind on their rent, adding up to approximately $57 million in past due payments. In addition, a Chicago Neighborhood Building Owners Alliance survey finds that 71% of landlords surveyed in September said they had tenants behind on rent.
