Journalist Glenn Greenwald is accusing Democratic U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth of being among those victimizing Pulse nightclub shooting victims all over again.
“Democratic senators and activist groups promoting a false, conclusively disproven narrative about the Pulse shootings for their own benefits,” Greenwald posted on Twitter. “Anti-LGBT animus was not part of that massacre. It dishonors the memory of the victims - & the LGBT cause - to lie about what happened.”
Greenwald charges the two are misrepresenting the attack for political gain, with the true story being that the shooter randomly picked the gay club as the scene of his crime after finding security at other locations too tight.
“This tweet is an absolute lie,” Greenwald said. “Every journalist who covered the PULSE shootings and trial will tell you this. It's infuriating to watch Senators blatantly lie this way.”
The June 2016 shooting in Orlando, Fla., left 49 people dead. During the attack, gunman Omar Mateen is reported to have called 911 and pledged allegiance to the leader of the virulently anti-gay Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
On the night of the shooting, Mateen Googled and visited several Orlando hotspots including Walt Disney World and Epcot. The Orlando Sentinel reports he later drove to Eve Orlando before making his way to Pulse sometime after 1 a.m.
