The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced that it will reopen lanes closed for construction where possible during the Labor Day holiday weekend. This measure aims to reduce travel disruptions. Non-emergency closures will be suspended from 3 p.m. on Friday, September 1, until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 4.

However, several lane closures will remain in effect throughout the holiday period. Motorists are advised to expect delays and plan for extra travel time in these areas. IDOT urges drivers to pay attention to changed conditions and signage in work zones, adhere to speed limits, avoid using mobile devices, and remain alert for workers and equipment.

In District 1, notable closures include the outbound Bishop Ford Freeway ramp to eastbound 130th Street in Chicago and two lanes closed on southbound Du Sable Lake Shore Drive along Jackson Park. Several other lane reductions and closures persist across Cook County and surrounding areas.

Elsewhere in Illinois, significant lane reductions continue on various highways including Interstate 55 at Lemont Road in Woodridge (DuPage County), Grand Avenue between Deep Lake and Munn roads in Lindenhurst (Lake County), U.S. Route 30 over the Union Pacific Railroad east of Rock Falls (Lee County), and multiple sites within Bureau County among others.

Motorists are encouraged to consider alternate routes when feasible to avoid work areas. In a broader context, IDOT is working under the Rebuild Illinois capital program with plans to improve over 2,500 miles of highway and nearly ten million square feet of bridge deck over six years. The program represents a $33.2 billion investment into transportation infrastructure across Illinois.

To date, approximately $12.1 billion has been spent statewide as part of Rebuild Illinois on improving highways, bridges, and implementing additional safety measures.

Further information about ongoing projects can be accessed through IDOT's online resources or social media platforms.
