St. Patrick's Day is a time for celebration across Illinois, but it also brings concerns about impaired driving. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has partnered with the Illinois State Police (ISP) and over 200 local law enforcement agencies to address this issue. Their message is clear: "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and "Drive High - Get a DUI."
Steve Travia, IDOT's Director of Highways and Chief Engineer, emphasized the importance of planning ahead. "If you're celebrating St. Patrick's Day with dyed beer or other green substances, your No. 1 priority is finding a sober driver before the festivities start," he said. "Waiting until after you're impaired is too late."
To support these efforts, federal highway safety funds are available through IDOT for various enforcement activities such as roadside safety checks and seat belt enforcement zones.
Col. Margaret McGreal from the ISP Division of Patrol also urged caution: "Regardless of whether you're grabbing a couple pints or drinking Irish whiskey, don't count on luck to get you home safely." She advised designating a sober driver or using ride-sharing services.
For those hosting parties, there are responsibilities to consider. Hosts can be held liable if someone they served alcohol to gets involved in an impaired driving crash. It's recommended that hosts ensure guests have designated sober drivers and provide non-alcoholic beverages.
Attendees should also plan ahead by designating a sober driver before events begin and considering alternative transportation options if needed.
The overall message remains consistent: prioritize safety by making responsible choices during St. Patrick's Day celebrations.
