As the year 2023 draws to a close, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois State Police (ISP), and nearly 200 law enforcement agencies across Illinois are intensifying their efforts to ensure road safety. They will be working overtime from now until the beginning of the new year.

"Getting behind the wheel after drinking or using impairing drugs is a criminal act that jeopardizes your safety and the safety of others," stated Steve Travia, IDOT's Director of Highways Project Implementation. He emphasized that laws against behaviors such as not wearing a seat belt, distracted driving, and speeding exist to protect those using public roads.

The final statewide enforcement initiative for 2023 aims to save lives by focusing on impaired driving, seat belt use, speeding, distracted driving, and other traffic violations. As of December 14 this year, there have been 1,213 fatalities in crashes—11 more than during the same period last year.

"During this time of year when more people are out celebrating, ISP has additional troopers on the road working to stop drunk and dangerous drivers before they cause a crash," said ISP Division of Patrol Col. Chris Owen. He advised those celebrating to plan for safe transportation home by designating a driver or using ride-share services if they intend to drink.

Officials encourage planning ahead for New Year's Eve celebrations by arranging sober transportation options like public transit or ride-sharing apps. They also advise taking keys away from anyone who may drive impaired and ensuring they get home safely.

This increased law enforcement activity is funded through federal resources managed by IDOT and aligns with their multimedia campaign "It's Not a Game."
