The Illinois Department of Revenue has announced a waiver of penalties and interest for taxpayers affected by Hurricane Ian, which occurred in September 2022. This relief is available to those who are unable to file or pay their taxes on time due to the hurricane's impact.

Taxpayers seeking this relief should write "Hurricane Ian – September 2022" prominently on both their tax return and the envelope used for mailing. Additionally, they must include a brief written explanation detailing why they cannot meet the filing or payment deadlines. It is important to clearly indicate that an abatement of penalties and interest is being requested.

In their request, taxpayers should provide their name, account number (only the last four digits if using a Social Security number), mailing address, and an estimated date by which they expect to be able to file or pay. Requests can also be submitted electronically via email at REV.DisasterRelief@illinois.gov.

This relief applies to all income tax returns and payments that were due from September 23, 2022, through February 15, 2023.
