The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs (IDVA), in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Agriculture and the Illinois State Fair, is extending an invitation to veterans and their families for a complimentary day at the Illinois State Fair on Sunday, August 13, 2023. This event is part of an annual tradition that includes various activities and entertainment, culminating in a parade featuring state officials, IDVA Assistant Director Anthony Vaughn, veterans' organizations, JROTC teams, and IDVA staff. The theme for this year is "No One Fights Alone."

Veterans and their families are eligible for free admission upon presenting any form of military identification. However, parking fees are not covered.

The day's events will commence at 10:00 a.m. with a JROTC competition. Concurrently from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the Veteran Benefit Expo will be held at The Shed. The main program is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., followed by entertainment at the Lincoln Stage from 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. At 3:00 p.m., there will be an award ceremony for the JROTC participants, concluding with a veteran parade along Grandstand Avenue at 4:00 p.m.

The Benefits Exposition aims to provide information about benefits and services available to veterans and their families through IDVA as well as other state and federal agencies, veteran service organizations, and non-profits.

JROTC drill teams participating in the competition will have the opportunity to win first, second, or third prize along with monetary gifts and plaques provided by service organizations.

According to IDVA's mission statement: "The mission of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs is to empower veterans and their families to thrive." This goal is pursued through assistance in navigating resources across federal, state, and local levels; providing long-term health care in Veterans' Homes; and collaborating with other agencies on issues such as education, mental health, housing, employment among others.
