The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the Illinois Conservation Foundation (ICF) have announced that over 6,600 students will benefit from field trips to state parks, natural areas, and museums this year. These educational excursions are made possible through the Illinois Biodiversity Field Trip Grant Program.
A total of $99,600 has been allocated for 107 field trip grants in 2024, covering 30 counties across Illinois. IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie emphasized the importance of these trips by stating, "This program allows students to visit areas throughout Illinois to see firsthand what they've been learning about the great outdoors in the classroom."
The funding for these grants is provided by private donations from the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Foundation of Skokie and the D.F. and M.T. Grohne Family Foundation of Wilmington. The ICF coordinates these donations along with grant funding.
Since its start in 2001, the program has distributed more than $1.5 million and enabled over 128,000 students to participate in field trips related to their curriculum. Teachers can apply for funds to cover expenses such as transportation and substitute teachers.
Applications for this competitive grant program must be submitted by January 31 each year. More information is available through the IDNR Division of Education at dnr.teachkids@illinois.gov.
