Survived by his beloved wife, Pastor Kathy Watland, his daughters Tori (Mitch) Prickett and Brooke (Steven) Olson, and his cherished grandchildren Colson, Cailyn, and Cami, Gary leaves a legacy of love and faith. His sister, Arlene Carroll, also mourns his passing. Gary was predeceased by his parents Adele Yvonne and Aldon Watland, brother Bernard Watland, and loyal canine companion Roxy who was his faithful sidekick.
In 1970, Gary graduated from Morris Community High School before pursuing an education in electronic trade at a school in Des Moines, Iowa. Throughout his life, Gary delighted in whisking his family to novel and memorable destinations, ensuring lasting keepsakes from each adventure.
Fulfillment for Gary was found outdoors, whether tending to tractors or assisting with the maintenance of the church property, where his faith and community spirit flourished. He reveled in the restoration of classic cars, relishing the ambiance of car shows. A devoted Notre Dame football fan, Gary’s love for the game was undeniable.
Gary will be fondly remembered for his compassionate nature, unwavering commitment to aiding those in need, and his tireless efforts to share the word of God with all he encountered. His legacy embodies love, faith, and the simple joys of life.
A celebration of Gary’s life is scheduled for Friday, December 6th, at Ambassadors for Christ Church, 702 E North Street, Morris. Visitation will be held from 10am-12pm, followed by the service at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gary’s honor to Ambassadors for Christ Church for a memorial fund are appreciated.
