The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and Governor JB Pritzker have announced the selection of two classified school employees as nominees for the 2025 Recognizing Inspiring School Employees (RISE) Award. The nominees, Arllette Antunez from Community Consolidated School District 59 and Claye Vogelsang from McLean County Unit District 5, are recognized for their significant contributions to their respective school communities.

State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Sanders remarked on the nominees' dedication: “Arllette and Claye exemplify the heart and dedication that make our schools a safe and welcoming space for every student and family.” He praised their efforts in supporting students' physical and mental needs to ensure equitable engagement in school opportunities.

Arllette Antunez serves as a community outreach specialist in Elk Grove Village's Community Consolidated School District 59. She has been pivotal in initiatives like the Community Cares Closet and food distribution services, promoting equity through cultural events such as “Noche de Encanto,” and addressing attendance issues with tailored interventions. Principal Larry Ganan of Admiral Byrd Elementary School commended her impact: “Arllette’s impact on our community is immeasurable.”

Claye Vogelsang, working as a family support coordinator for high schools in McLean County Unit District 5, is known for connecting families with necessary resources. His experience spans over two decades in public service roles, where he has addressed barriers to student success through initiatives like grab-and-go breakfast options. Principal Angela Codron of Normal West High School highlighted his empathetic approach: “Claye’s extreme level of care for people as humans first sets him apart from his colleagues.”

In the previous year, Illinois nominated Mario Diaz Albarran from Community Consolidated School District 15 and Lakinda Brown from Freeport School District 145 for the RISE Awards. Diaz Albarran was honored as the national winner by the U.S. Department of Education.

The RISE Award recognizes classified employees across various occupational specialties including paraprofessionals, administrative services, transportation, food services, custodial work, security services, health services, technical services, and skilled trades. The award is facilitated by the U.S. Department of Education with announcements typically made each spring.

Further information about the RISE Award can be found on ISBE’s Educator Recognition Opportunities webpage.
