U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona has announced the designation of 356 schools, including 18 from Illinois, as National Blue Ribbon Schools for the year 2024. This recognition by the U.S. Department of Education highlights schools that have demonstrated excellence in academic performance or have made significant progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.
State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Sanders expressed his pride in the achievement: “I am extremely proud of the 18 Illinois schools named National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2024,” he said. He emphasized that these schools represent a statewide dedication to educational equity and excellence, acknowledging educators, administrators, families, and community members who contribute to creating environments conducive to student growth and success.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, established in 1982, honors schools achieving high levels of academic success in the United States. These schools are noted for their effective teaching methods and comprehensive professional development for staff. A focus on data-driven instruction is central to their approach, aiming to ensure every student's success through collaboration among families, communities, and educators.
Displaying a National Blue Ribbon School award flag is a symbol of outstanding teaching and learning within these institutions. Such schools are considered models of effective practices for educators nationwide. The program emphasizes empowering educators, focusing on equity, and fostering partnerships with community and family members to support student success. Both public and nonpublic schools may be nominated once every five years.
