Under the direction of Governor JB Pritzker, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has continued efforts to modernize and revitalize transportation infrastructure across Illinois throughout 2024. This initiative is part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program, which was enacted in 2019 and allocates $45 billion to upgrade the state's aging infrastructure. By September 30, approximately $17.2 billion had been invested in various projects statewide.

Governor Pritzker stated, "Our state's infrastructure has been under a full-scale revitalization since I signed Rebuild Illinois into law." He expressed enthusiasm for the progress made in 2024 and anticipation for further advancements.

In June, Governor Pritzker and IDOT announced a $41.42 billion multi-year construction program spanning from fiscal years 2025 to 2030. The program aims to improve transportation systems throughout every county in Illinois.

Significant projects include major developments on Interstate 80 in Will County, where completed bridges mark a $96 million investment as part of a larger $1.3 billion project. Other noteworthy efforts are underway on highways such as I-57, I-64, and I-70.

Rail improvements have also been notable with progress on the Springfield Rail Improvements Project and plans to resume passenger rail service between Rockford and Chicago by 2027. Additionally, Amtrak's Borealis service launched successfully in May.

Infrastructure modernization extends beyond roads and rails. In Metro East, new facilities were opened for Madison County Transit and St. Clair County Metrolink system riders.

In recognition of aviation achievements within the state, seven airports received accolades as "Airports of the Year," with Peoria's Gen. Wayne A. Downing International Airport recognized as Primary Airport of the Year.

The state’s commitment to diversity saw IDOT surpass its goal for participation by firms in the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program for the first time in at least fifteen years.

Governor Pritzker emphasized environmental initiatives through grants aimed at developing electric vehicle charging stations along interstate corridors—part of his broader goal to promote sustainable transportation solutions across Illinois.
