On January 13, 2025, a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Chicago Public School District 299. The request was made by Prairie State Wire, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The request sought information regarding the number of non-U.S. citizens or "migrants" currently enrolled in the school district. This term is often used to refer to individuals who are not U.S. citizens and may be residing in the country without legal permission.
As members of Prairie State Wire, we believe that access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we have requested a fee waiver as media professionals.
