Today at Lincoln Grade School in Washington, Illinois, first-grade teacher Jessica Wentz was surprised with the Milken Educator Award. This prestigious award, accompanied by an unrestricted $25,000 cash prize, was presented during a school assembly led by Illinois State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Sanders and Jennifer Fuller, Milken Educator Awards vice president.

Wentz is a graduate of Lincoln Grade School and has returned to her alma mater to inspire young learners. She is the only recipient of the 2024-25 Milken Educator Award from Illinois and the first-ever in Washington Grade School District #52's history. Illinois has participated in the Milken Educator Awards since 1988.

Jennifer Fuller praised Wentz for her dedication to education: “Jessica Wentz instills a love of learning in every endeavor, from classroom teaching to mentoring others.” Fuller highlighted Wentz's engaging teaching methods and strong community relationships as key factors in her impact on education.

Dr. Tony Sanders also commended Wentz’s innovative approach: “Her creativity, dedication, and passion for her students make learning an exciting adventure and a transformative experience.” He noted activities like “Adjective Runway” and “Hulk Smash” math game as examples of her dynamic teaching style.

The Milken Educator Awards have recognized over 3,000 educators across nearly 40 years. Known as the "Oscars of Teaching," these awards aim to elevate the teaching profession and encourage young people to consider careers in education.

Jessica Wentz's educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in early childhood education from Illinois State University and a Master of Arts in curriculum and instruction from Concordia University. Her commitment extends beyond her classroom through involvement in various school committees and mentoring roles.

Recipients of the Milken Educator Award benefit from mentorship opportunities aimed at enhancing educational leadership. They will attend an all-expenses-paid forum in Los Angeles this April to network with fellow educators.
