Illinois lawmakers are considering Senate Bill 1976, which would require the state to adopt certain workplace regulations introduced during the Biden Administration. These include the 2024 independent-contracting rule if federal rules are modified or rolled back by the new administration.
The 2024 rule implemented a multi-factor test complicating work as an independent contractor. Critics argue it reduced worker flexibility, increased employer costs, and led to more lawsuits over worker classification. Earlier this month, the new administration announced it would stop enforcing this rule.
Springfield legislators aim to reinstate these rules in Illinois, potentially raising business costs in the state. The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Illinois is urging small business owners to express their concerns about how these changes could affect them.
"Your legislators need to hear from you about how this would impact your small business!"
