Chicago, IL - Catherine M. (Katie) Phelan, a beloved mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on June 11, 2025. She was married to the late Joe Phelan and raised their nine children in the Beverly neighborhood. Katie's life was dedicated to her family, and she was preceded in death by her sons, Michael and David.

Katie's children, John, Tom, Joe, Jim (Marylu), Catherine (Mark), Mary (Tim), and Bill, were at the core of her being. She was a loving and proud grandmother to 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Katie's home was a place of warmth and joy, where she shared her sharp wit, unwavering loyalty, and listening skills with all who crossed her path.

Her spirit of adventure led her to enjoy traveling, particularly to Ireland, a place dear to her heart. Known for her sense of humor and selflessness, Katie touched many lives with her kindness and generous spirit. She returned to teaching kindergarten after her youngest son began school, influencing the minds of her young students with her warmth and patience.

Katie's love for books and learning shone through in her work at the local library and her participation in a monthly book club. Her charisma, quiet strength, and compassion were felt by all who knew her, extending far beyond her family circle.

A visitation will be held on Monday, June 16th, at Curley Funeral Home in Chicago Ridge, IL, with a memorial service to follow, led by Father Dennis Lyle and her children. In lieu of flowers, contributions to L’Arche Chicago would be appreciated.

Katie will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those touched by her love. Her legacy of love, generosity, and strength will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
