Beryll “BJ” Yates-Heiferman, a trailblazing animal rescue advocate known for her compassion and commitment to pets and people, passed away on August 1, 2025, at her residence in Homewood, Illinois.

Throughout her life, BJ's knack for connecting animals with their perfect human companions touched the hearts of many, creating enduring bonds and forever homes. An esteemed member of the equine and animal rescue communities, she forged enduring friendships through her profound love for animals and her nurturing spirit.

In addition to her rescue endeavors, BJ had a successful career as a legal secretary. Subsequently, she dedicated several years to transporting animals for rescue, ensuring their safe relocations to shelters and foster homes.

BJ shared a life of love, friendship, and devotion with her husband of 35 years, Jay Heiferman. She is survived by her treasured dogs Bennie and Larry, cats Bandit, Princess Leah, Bunny, Squishy, and Romeo, and horses Tootsie and Flikka, all of whom held a special place in her heart, just as she did in theirs.

Remembered by her cherished sisters Barbara Slivnick and Beth Hunter, along with other family members and friends, she will be celebrated for her kindness, compassion, and unwavering love.

In honor of BJ's memory, donations may be made to Fido’s Landing of Homewood.

Services are scheduled for Tuesday at 11 AM at Temple Beit Sholom in Munster, IN. Interment will follow at Beverly Cemetery. For those unable to attend in person, the funeral will be live-streamed.
