Physicians in Illinois can now apply for or renew their controlled substance licenses online through the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation’s (IDFPR) updated licensing system. The Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) advocated for these changes after hearing from members about challenges with the previous process.

According to ISMS, physicians are now able to submit applications for a controlled substance license online, even if they do not have an active physician license. They also have the option to apply for both licenses at the same time. Multiple applications can be completed in one transaction using IDFPR’s new online licensing platform, CORE: Comprehensive Online Regulatory Environment.

"ISMS was instrumental in helping to achieve these changes for the controlled license application process within IDFPR’s licensing ecosystem. We initiated our request due to feedback received from our members who experienced difficulty applying for and renewing these licenses. Your input made a difference!"

Physicians with questions can contact the IDFPR licensing call center at 800-560-6420 or reach out by email to the ISMS Health Policy Research and Advocacy team.
