Rep. John Cabello (R-Machesney Park) is calling for the resignation of Gov. Bruce Rauner and at the same time is endorsing Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) in her 2018 Republican primary run to unseat Rauner.

Cabello cites what he calls Rauner’s lack of credibility as the primary reason why he should go, pointing to Rauner's signing taxpayer-funded abortion bill HB40 into law after vowing as a candidate that he would have “no social agenda” as an example.

Cabello added that Rauner also told GOP lawmakers in private meetings that he had no intentions of signing off on HB40.

"When you tell someone you are not going to do something, you should stick to your word," Cabello said in a press release. "I can't trust any words that he says from here on out."

Ives welcomed Cabello’s support during a recent press conference, where she also blasted Rauner over what she described as his constant betrayal of voters.

“Republican state legislators continue to abandon Gov. Rauner and his agenda,” Ives said in a release. “It is further evidence that the betrayals Gov. Rauner denies are very real, and that his ability to accomplish anything is irreparably damaged. Rauner talks of working with Democrats to find bipartisan compromises, when he hasn’t been able to work with Republicans – or even bring Republicans to the table.”

Cabello joins a growing list of state legislators that have endorsed Ives that includes Reps. Tom Morrison (R-Palatine), Peter Breen (R-Lombard), Margo McDermed (R-Mokeno), Allen Skillicorn (R-East Dundee), Barb Wheeler (R-Crystal Lake) and David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) and Sens. Tim Bivins (R-Dixon) and Kyle McCarter (R-Lebanon).

It also leaves Ives sounding confident.

“Rauner can walk around with ‘Governor’ sash for a little while longer but, as far as many of my colleagues are concerned, he's already a lame duck,” she said in the release.
