A bill that would require all public elementary and high schools to include “a unit of instruction studying the significant role of African American individuals in society” has been referred to a House Rules Committee.
Sponsored by Rep. Juliana Stratton (D-Chicago), House Bill 5857 would also amend the School Code, mandating that textbooks authorized for purchase “must accurately portray the diversity of our society, including the role and contributions of African American individuals, and must be non-discriminatory.”
The bill also stipulates that the regional superintendent of schools be required to monitor a school district's compliance with all curriculum requirements as they are outlined.
Stratton's district consists entirely of Chicago.
