Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider called on the U.S. Senate to quickly put an end to what he sees as the House’s direct attack on the Constitution with its impeachment of President Donald Trump.
“Our constitution’s most extreme remedy for alleged presidential misconduct should never be utilized on purely partisan grounds as today’s roll call indicates,” Schneider said in a post to Facebook soon after House Democrats formally moved to impeach the president on abuse of power and obstruction of Congress articles. “It’s my hope the Senate will quickly put an end to this witch hunt.”
Schneider said Democrats have been building toward impeachment ever since Trump stunned many in the political stratosphere with his 2016 victory over former First Lady Hillary Clinton.

“For over three years, Democrats have been searching high and low for an excuse to reverse the results,” he said. “Their disdain for the judgment of the American people has taken them down this unconscionable path. It’s a path that led House Democrats to make a partisan mockery of impeachment’s serious and grave nature.”
Among Democrats in Illinois, U.S. Reps. Lauren Underwood (Naperville), Dan Lipinski (Western Springs) and Cheri Bustos (Moline) voted in favor of impeachment.
Throughout the ongoing proceedings, Trump has maintained his innocence, and he and his allies have particularly targeted lawmakers like Underwood who represent districts that Trump won in 2016.
