Despite his narrow loss Tuesday night, Peter Breen stands by the platform he put before voters of the 48th District.
“We put forward a plan to clean house and rebuild Illinois,” Breen told the Prairie State Wire. “But right now, the ruling Democrats in the General Assembly appear to have no interest in doing any of those things even though the need for reform in Springfield has never been greater.”
Breen narrowly missed out on having a chance to be part of the reform movement he thinks is desperately needed in Springfield, dropping his 48th District showdown against incumbent Democrat Terra Costa-Howard by a count of 32,217 votes (53.6%) to 27,837 (46.4%).
“We ran an extremely efficient, outperforming what you would expect based on final results,” Breen added. “We had a quarter of the money Costa-Howard got from Speaker Madigan, but we still managed to cover a lot of ground and sway a lot of voters.”
In the end, Breen said he was swept up by the anti-Republican swoon he thinks plagued all of DuPage County.
“It was as bad as the 2018 cycle was for Republicans,” he said. "In my district, President (Donald) Trump did worse than he did four years ago and we were able to run 8 points ahead of him” he said. “We manage to pull that off even though we were outspent 4-1. All Mike Madigan’s money makes a huge difference in an environment like this.”
No matter what, Breen insists he isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
“I will continue to serve folks all around the nation in my role as a constitutional attorney,” he said. "Who knows, I wouldn’t even say never to another run. Right now, I worry too many of our leaders don’t seem interested in reform and moving this state forward in a real, responsible way.”
